So if you follow my training at all, you know my training leading up to this meet wasn’t great. My results were even a hair more disappointing than the training would have led me to believe. But for me stuff like this is always a kick in the pants for next cycle.
The meet itself was great. I had a great time. I just wish I had done better in the meet. Oh well… no use in dwelling on it now. Time to set up my next cycle.
I want to review this meet a little different from before. First I’m going to look at what I got right. I think I have a good process for my squat and deadlift training. I just have to follow it rather than get distracted by shiny objects. Squats will return to reps and high RPE’s. Squat assistance will see a return of bands and chains. There will still be bottom end work, but my squat tends to be pretty balanced so it needs to be trained that way.
Deadlift process is solid too. I need to make sure I’m getting my reps in. Focus on 3-4 reps seems to be magical for my pull. Assistance work will be mostly band and chain work as it agrees with my pull.
The flex template was good too! Got away from it at the end (because the workouts were so hard; terrible reasoning). I plan to use a very slightly modified version for most weeks.
Now for what didn’t work (and what I plan to do about it).
There were three things that didn’t work and they are all related. The Lots-o-singles plan (at least this implementation of it) did not work. And related to that, my bench training at large, especially in the last several weeks leading up to the meet, did not work.
If you look back at my training logs, you might notice that over the last 5-6 weeks I have done more heavy singles than usual. I typically worked up to x1 @9.5 on the contest lifts once a week with the rest of the week being pretty typical training. For whatever reason, be it a lack of frequency, few drop sets, overall loss in volume, etc… it didn’t work for ANY lift. Maybe it would have been grand if I had done x1 @9.5 everyday, but I don’t have the time or desire to spend that much time in my garage.
I also dorked up my template. I changed it around to emphasize supplemental lifts in the developmental stage, which seems to make sense on the surface. But what this did was shift a lot of my “Assist” slots to a lower priority. And with the schedule I currently have, that low priority often got nixed. Big mistake. You have to train heavy if you want to be strong.
I find my bench results most disturbing from the meet. And because of that, I think my bench training leading up to it requires special attention. As a combination of the singles approach and the template change, I spent a great deal of time on bench exercises that didn’t matter. And if you look at my force curve you can see it didn’t matter. So my bench dropped like a rock. Now I have to build it back up. Again.
All that stuff brings me to my last problem – Shiny Objects. If I look at the results from my last training plan, I started the plan on November 7th with a 2065 total. I peaked right around the new year with a 2120 total or there about. Then I changed the plan and incorporated all the mistakes I listed above and finished the meet with a 1933 total. I had a plan that was working, but I got distracted by the “shiny objects” of singles training, too-smart-for-your-own-good templates, and the rest.
Now it’s time to look forward. I am where I am and I will have to build myself up from here. The good news is that I have a good handle on what I need to do. I built a training plan that is closer in overall strategy to what I was doing in late 2011. I made only a few subtle changes and I made them with a lot of thought and discussion with other lifters. But I’ve had good plans before and sabotaged them with “shiny objects”, so here’s how I plan to prevent that this time…
I have written a training report for this cycle. Those familiar with my coaching methods have seen the training reports before. It’s a general overview of the program. I will post the training report in the forum and I would ask that those of you who follow my logs also keep an eye on that training report. Of course the plan will have subtle changes as I go – one exercise might get swapped for another, reps or RPE’s might change. But if you see a fundamental philosophical shift (such as the singles fiasco), then show up at my doorstep with torches and pitchforks. This meet is important to me – too important to let me self-sabotage it.
So that’s about it. I’m glad to have gotten that out of the way before the World Cup. Now it’s time to train hard and focus on this contest. 100 days out….

Kul

Inga skitvikter i 120kg heller.
